Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain Method for Electromagnetic and Multiphysics Problems

Abstract: In this talk, we present a discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) method for the modeling and simulation of electromagnetic (EM) and multiphysics problems. After the introduction of the basic nodal DGTD formulation, its application in a multiphysics problem, the interaction of EM waves and plasmas, is described by a coupled EM-plasma system where the EM physics is governed by Maxwell’s equations and the plasma physics is described by the equations of diffusion and motion. The resulting multiphysics and multiscale system is then solved by the nodal DGTD method in three dimensions. The air breakdown during a high-power microwave (HPM) operation and the resulting plasma formation and shielding are modeled and simulated. To address several important numerical issues in such a simulation, accurate and efficient numerical techniques are then described to enhance the DGTD method. This includes a continuity-preserving and divergence-cleaning scheme and dynamic h- and p-adaptation algorithms for the full-wave analysis of EM and multiphysics problems.

Biography:

Dr. Su Yan received the B.S. degree in electromagnetics and microwave technology from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu, China, in 2005, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (UIUC), Urbana, IL, USA, in 2012 and 2016, respectively.

He joined the Howard University, Washington, DC, USA, as an Assistant Professor in August 2018, and now is the Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He has authored or coauthored over 100 papers in refereed journals and conferences and one book chapter. His current research interests include nonlinear electromagnetic and multiphysics problems, electromagnetic scattering and radiation, and numerical methods in computational electromagnetics.

Dr. Yan is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and a Life Member of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES). He received the ACES Early Career Award “for contributions to linear and nonlinear electromagnetic and multiphysics modeling and simulation methods” by ACES in 2020, the Edward E. Altschuler AP-S Magazine Prize Paper Award by IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society in 2020, the P. D. Coleman Outstanding Research Award and the Yuen T. Lo Outstanding Research Award by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UIUC, in 2015 and 2014, respectively. He serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Access, an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Numerical Modelling: Electronic Networks, Devices and Fields.
